Well unfortunately me and the kids did not get to go to another game this week. Brooke has had a terrible cold, lost her voice and all. I ended up taking her to the doctor after picking her up from school (yes, I did make her go to school, I will discuss this later). So again we are in the doctors office on a Friday afternoon at 4pm. Never a good thing to do, but I did not want to go all weekend with her getting worse, and she was able to go ahead and get the flu mist! One down, one more to go. Logan gets his in 2 weeks for his 3rd birthday checkup!
Anyhow, back to the doctor, I told her how bad I felt by sending her to school and wasn't sure that was the right thing to do. I always second guess myself about this issue when they are not running fever and if they miss, then they miss out on a lot of learning at this age. And, she only sounded bad when she would start crying and wining, other than that she sounded ok. You have to know that sometimes, she works herself up and knows it makes it sound worse. This kid learned early!
The doctor told me she could go to school since she wasn't running fever. Of course though she is contageous, but at this age the kids are much more immune to simple colds. I know Brooke has been a lot more immune over the last several years. We hardly ever take her to the doctor for anything other than a checkup. Now, with Logan being in Preschool, I would easily keep him out due to the age of the kids and they are not as immune yet. Also, if they are out, it is not like they are missing much that day!
Anyhow, at home we stayed while Daddy and the rest of our town was at South Gwinnett playing some great football! Way to go RAMS!
Grayson 49, South Gwinnett 14By David FriedlanderStaff WriterSNELLVILLE -
If Grayson proved anything in Friday night's game against neighborhood rival South Gwinnett, it is that it can make adjustments on the fly - with the emphasis on the word "fly."With South's defense geared up to stop the Rams' powerful running game, quarterback Tyler Horne took to the air in key situations, with much success.
Meanwhile, the Grayson defense - which had given up bunches of yards to South through the air in the first half - clamped down on its coverages and put more pressure on the quarterback to slow down the Comets aerial assault in the final 24 minutes.
Throw in some opportunism by cashing in on late South turnovers and it was the recipe for a 49-14 victory for the No. 7 state-ranked Rams at Richard Snell Community Stadium.
"We had to make adjustments," Grayson coach Mickey Conn said after his team improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in Region 8-AAAAA play. "We hadn't really seen a passing team. (Friday) night, we had to defend the pass.
"Tyler threw the ball well, and we caught the ball well. I couldn't be more proud of my team.
"Grayson did have it's customary good night on the ground, running for 252 yards - led by Ean Pemberton's 93 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.
However, the Rams also showed they weren't one dimensional as Horne completed 7 of 12 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns, which combined with the running game to produce 458 total yards.
And they needed that balanced attack, especially with South's (1-3, 1-1) passing game keeping pace in the first half.
Mike Polascik threw for nearly half of is 208 yards on the night - on 16-for-29 passing - in the first quarter, and capped an 11-play, 71-yard drive with a 1-yard sneak to pull the Comets even at 7-7 with 31.2 seconds left in the first quarter.
South could've done even more damage as Polascik had six passes among his nine incomplete passes in the first half dropped by his receivers.
"We had too many dropped balls," South coach John Small said. "We had too many turnovers, ... and we didn't do enough to get (Grayson) off the field and get our offense the ball.
"If those mistakes weren't enough, another blunder and a bad break pushed the Comets into an even bigger hole late in the first half with Grayson holding just a 13-7 lead.
First, a muffed punt, pounced on by Grayson's Ches Whitesides, gave the Rams the ball at the South 32-yard line, which set up Pemberton's 3-yard touchdown that extended the Grayson lead to 20-7 with 4:50 left in the first half.
Then, Horne went up top on one of his play fakes and caught a break when South cornerback Derrick Brown - who had been stride for stride with Harrell Gunn - twisted his knee on a cut and fell to the ground in pain.
That allowed Gunn to break free and catch the ball in stride for a 60-yard touchdown with 1:50 left, which made the score 28-7 after Pemberton's two-point conversion.
Still, South was right back in the game after Polascik hit Aaron Jividen for a 46-yard touchdown pass to cut Grayson's lead to 28-14 with 1:24 left in the third quarter.
And it looked like the Comets might get another chance to strike when the defense put Grayson in a third-and-8 situation at its own 22-yard line.
But Horne rolled to his left and hit Tucker Kreis for an 11-yard gain for a first down to keep alive what turned into a 15-play, 78-yard drive that culminated with a big break for the Rams, when linemen Joseph Champaign fell on a fumble in the end zone for a score that extended the lead to 35-14 with 7:25 to play.
Champaign was also a big key for the Grayson defense that corralled the South air game to just 3 of 10 passing for 72 yards in the second half.
In addition to putting the clamps on Johnathan Krause, who had six catches for 75 yards, for just one reception in the second half, Champaign led a furious pass rush with two of the Rams' three sacks.
"We just worked on what we were working on in practice (all week) - using our speed to get back to the quarterback," Champaign said.
The Rams then put the game away by converting two more South turnovers into touchdowns over the last 4:47.
